Today, March 12, 2026, marks 20 years since the devastating tornadoes that tore through Sangamon County, impacting New Berlin, Jerome, and Springfield. It’s a day we remember not just for the destruction, but for the incredible resilience and unity that followed in our community.
On that fateful day, Jerome and Springfield faced extensive damage, but thanks to the strength of our community, there was no loss of life or major injuries reported. As we reflect on the past two decades, we are reminded of the kindness, generosity, and support that defined the aftermath of the disaster.
This evening, WICS Channel 20 will air a special segment on the anniversary at 5pm, 6pm, and 10pm, and Fox 55 will feature it at 9pm. These broadcasts will highlight the outpouring of support from residents, first responders, and volunteers who came together in the face of adversity.
One of the most powerful symbols of our community’s strength was the Village of Jerome’s Civic Center. It became a beacon of hope, providing food and shelter to those in need. The Civic Center’s role as a gathering place for all who needed assistance showcased the very best of humanity in action.
We owe a deep debt of gratitude to all those who lent a helping hand during that difficult time. Your generosity and selflessness continue to resonate within our community, and the spirit of unity that emerged in the wake of the tornadoes still shines brightly today.
On behalf of the Village of Jerome, I extend our heartfelt thanks to every individual who made a difference during this time. You are the reason our community is stronger than ever.
Michael Lopez
President, Village of Jerome
